Minimalism… Kinda

Minimalism.  Have you heard of it before?  You may have heard some extreme things about it.  Today, I want you to know more about minimalism!  It’s a way of life that I DO NOT FOLLOW AT ALL.  Interesting, you may think, as to why I’m writing about it.  I find many things about the minimalist lifestyle to be very true, helpful, fascinating, and worthy to implement.

The whole point of this blog is about tech that you need or don’t need.  Minimalism is about everything you need or don’t need.  Like I said, I’m not a minimalist but sometimes wish I was.  I could, I guess, be minimalist but I don’t fancy it too much.  This video explains practically everything about minimalism and there are other videos out there of actual minimalists showing how they live (and they’re pretty interesting – worth watching).  I love many of the ideas found in minimalism that I’d like to share and I promise they aren’t extreme!  Let’s dive into a few:

  • Don’t buy something if you won’t use it.  We live in a shopping culture in America.  Whether we like to acknowledge it or not, we glorify ‘things’ too much.  Do we really NEED them?  A common and popular example are our closets.  How many shirts do you have that you haven’t worn in months?  No matter the weather?  I probably have about 8-10 outfits that I wear routinely.  Every other piece of fabric in my closet… haven’t touched in a long long time.  Some of my clothes I’ve had since high school!  I should just donate or get rid of them.  So, ask yourself before you buy a $30 shirt, “will I wear this a lot?  Or will I wear it a few times and not wear it again?”
  • A clean environment makes for a clean mind.  This sort of ties into what was said above.  We have too many ‘things’ all over the place.  I remember when I was a kid and tasked to clean my room, I would shove everything I owned in my closet and shut the door.  My room looked clean!  Until the next day when I opened my closet and everything fell out right back to the floor.  I dreamed of opening my closet and not having so much stuff.  There are things we all have that we haven’t used or needed in months.  You probably won’t ever need them if you haven’t touched them for a while.  Throw it away!
  • Spend money wisely. Lastly, saving money.  This is simple.  When you spend less on things you don’t need, you save money!  Wasting money is about the dumbest thing you can do.  Don’t be tempted to pay a lot for some ‘thing’ that cost someone else to make for $2 unless it is a necessity!

These are some things to keep in mind as you read through Tech You Need.  You’ll better understand where I’m coming from when I give opinions on certain products.  To wrap it all up, here’s a quote on minimalism from an unknown author, “I’ve found that the less stuff I own, the less my stuff owns me.”  Let’s not buy technology not worth our time or money!
